Ricardo Brey. Gap in the Clouds
Museum Hof van Busleyden and De Garage – 20.05. 2022 to 28.08.2022
With 'Gap in the Clouds' artist Ricardo Brey made a positive statement and portrayed a sign of hope in these turbulent times. The global pandemic and the escalating protests for racial and gender equality inspired Brey to create a series of introspective works. New work that reaches back to the past but is also willing to look to the future.
Ricardo Brey draws inspiration for his work from the richness of Afro-Cuban culture, personal memories and myths, legends and stories. The highlight of this exhibition was the 'Every Life is a Fire' series, a collection of enclosed boxes that evoke surprise and wonder. Opening them is a ritual in itself, prompting contemplation of what passes by.
‘Gap in the Clouds' was Ricardo Brey's first extensive solo exhibition in Belgium, following previous showings at SMAK Ghent (2006) and M HKA Antwerp (2015). Born in Cuba (1955, Havana), artist Ricardo Brey has been living in Belgium since 1990, when Jan Hoet invited him to participate in Documenta IX in Kassel. Throughout his career, Brey has received various awards and scholarships, including the Flemish Visual Arts Prize and a grant from the Guggenheim in New York. Ricardo Brey is an artist of international renown and was part of the Venice Biennale in 2015.
